“EMERGE 08 - Winter”
A Group Exhibition of Local Emerging Artists
12 Dec - 9 Jan
The South Tipperary Arts Centre continues its new emerging artist series with ‘EMERGE 08 - Winter’, focusing on the work of local emerging artists.
The South Tipperary Arts Officer, Sally O’Leary, curated the exhibition, which showcases the work of seven artists: Martina Coady, Emer Lynch, Lesley Lynch, Kathryn O’Brien, Roisin McAuley, Marian McGrath, and Michelle Seward. The work varies in style and form, and includes paintings, sculpture, prints, and batik.
The exhibition was from the 10th December, 2008 through the 9th January 2009.
24 Oct - 14 November
“‘Elegies’ is a series of paintings that began as an emotional response to the ‘War on Terror’ and the media’s onslaught of daily images of personal tragedies. These paintings emphasize the importance of the personal stories embedded in the images, underscored by an inherent unease about the current direction of global politics. Rather than make finite statements in the work, I prefer to allow the viewer to bring his or her own associations to bear on it.”
Mac Lochlainn is the 2008 recipient of the Golden Fleece Award.
He studied Fine Art in the National College of Art & Design, Dublin, graduating in 2000. In 2002, Mac Lochlainn spent a year in Temple Bar Gallery and Studios, working towards a solo show in the Ashford Gallery (R.H.A.). The catalogue for his show ‘Requiem’ in Kilmainham Gaol in 2005, was short-listed for an Oireachtas Award. He has participated in various open-submissions shows (RHA, Iontas, Eigse, Oireachtas) and in numerous group shows around the country and also with the 411 Gallery in China.
Mac Lochalinn is represented by the Paul Kane Gallery in Dublin, where he had a solo show in March this year entitled ‘Dearcadh’.
Mach Lochlainn has work in the collections of: AIB, Bank of Ireland, Office of Public Works, Revenue Commissioners, Foras na Gaeilge, Gael Linn, Wesley College, and the Boyle Civic Collection.

‘Bowzer - Paintings on Steel’
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Nicki Cheevers
9 Nov.– 1 Dec 2007.
Nicki Cheevers is a mixed media artist whose paintings really lie somewhere between painting and sculpture.
The Artist’s intention with these works is to create a dialogue between high art and low art. She has used subject matter and materials that are not traditionally associated with painting. The subject matter ranges from William Morris wallpaper designs to appropriated drawings from her seven-year-old son.
At present Nicki uses sheet steel as a surface. This allows her to be quite brutal with the work. The works are built up in layers using emulsion, gloss and enamels, and then corroded using acid and water and eroded using various power tools. In this
way she gives the paintings a sense of history and memory. Literally destroying what she starts with, builds it up again and brings out the beauty in it by layering and highlighting. It is a cumulative process; one thing leads to another.

‘Mandscape’
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
In partnership with The Ark, A Cultural centre for Children & The Touring Experiment
5 Oct. – 4 Nov 2007.
Mandscape is an exhibition of images of landscape where mankind is present, or where mankind has left a trace on the landscape. First exhibited in the Sligo Art Gallery in Spring 2007, Mandscape is now embarking on a national tour starting in the South Tipperary Arts Centre, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary.
Mandscape is accompanied by a textured programme of events where artists will take you through an explorative journey of the exhibition through ‘hands-on’ workshops that respond to the urban or rural environment of each venue. Talks and seminars will explore the individual experience of artists who have worked with children through contemporary visual art.
Mandscape features works by contemporary artists Brian Bourke, Oliver Comerford, Daniel De Chenu, Michael Durand, Martin Gale, Joy Gerrard, Nickie Hayden, Clare Langan, Brendan Neiland and Barbara Rae.
Curated by Martin Drury, founder and first directorof The Ark.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Richard Coghlan & Alan Raggett
31 Aug. – 29 Sept 2007.
Continuing it’s commitment to young and emerging artists, the Centre is proud to present ‘converse’ by Kilkenny artists Richard Coghlan and Alan Raggett.
Both Artists have been extensively involved with Endangered Studios, a Kilkenny County Council Arts
Office initiative. The Endangered group has achieved critical acclaim with exhibitions during Kilkenny Arts Festival.

Richard Coghlan works exclusively with self produced pigments. Using Charred Organic Matter, Coughlan creates a startling range of pigments which are then ground in gesso oil.
Alan Raggett confines himself to a palette of only five pigments, manipulating this limited colour range, he produces abstract fi gurative canvasses where he is free to explore textural qualities of the paint medium, using a mix of happenstance and concise control to create plays of shadow and light.
